PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Maymester in Tanzania is an interdisciplinary, experiential educational experience that allows students to earn credit in two academic courses while traveling across northern Tanzania and down to the Indian Ocean coast, including a visit to the island of Zanzibar. The majority of the instructional time is spent on site visits, which range from modern industries to traditional food markets, from an ocean reef to the Serengeti, from small towns like Moshi to cities like Dar es Salaam. The courses are integrated, and all students participate in all activities that help them understand African culture, and history. Students have the opportunity to interact with members of various traditional cultures, such as the Maasai, Chagga, Meru, and Swahili. Students can also see monkeys like vervets, colobus monkeys, and baboons. The "Cradle of Mankind," Oldupai Gorge, is included as the class travels from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti.
